Register the copyright in your software, website content, artwork, packaging design, literary work, music, video or sound recording with the Copyright Office and obtain a registration certificate that proves ownership.
Copyright arises automatically when an original work is created, but a registration certificate from the Copyright Office is the strongest evidence of ownership and the date of creation — invaluable in infringement disputes, licensing, funding and marketplace take-down requests. It covers literary works (books, manuals, website text, software source code), artistic works (logos, label artwork, packaging designs, illustrations, photographs), musical and dramatic works, cinematograph films and sound recordings.
We identify the correct category of work, prepare the application (Form XIV) with the Statement of Particulars and Statement of Further Particulars, obtain the NOC from the author / publisher where the applicant is different, arrange the trademark search certificate for artistic works used on goods, file with the Copyright Office and respond to any discrepancy notice until the certificate is issued.
Copyright does not need renewal. For literary, artistic, musical and dramatic works it lasts for the lifetime of the author plus 60 years; for films, sound recordings, photographs and works of companies / anonymous works it lasts 60 years from publication. The registration certificate stays valid for the full term.

No — copyright exists from creation. Registration is voluntary, but the certificate is the accepted proof of ownership and date in courts, with marketplaces and investors, which is why most brands register logos, artwork and software.
Both protect different things: trademark protects the logo as a brand identifier for specific goods / services; copyright protects it as an artistic work against copying anywhere. Brands usually do both; a TM search certificate is needed for the copyright filing of a logo used on goods.
Computer programs are registered as literary works. Source code (first and last pages, or the full code) is filed along with the application; we advise on what to submit so trade secrets are not exposed unnecessarily.
The Copyright Office fee depends on the type of work — for example literary, artistic and musical works attract a lower fee per work than films or sound recordings. The calculator shows the fee per the official schedule; it is paid at actuals.
Work created by employees in the course of employment belongs to the employer. For freelancers and agencies an assignment or NOC from the author is required — we prepare it as part of the filing.
